What a welcome to Baku!

After a long journey from Aberdeen Scotland, we made our way to the stunning JW Marriott hotel for some much needed rest. In the evening, we didn’t feel much up for traipsing around town to find somewhere to eat, so we treated ourselves to a frankly spectacular meal at OroNero, the hotel restaurant.

Coming from Europe, we felt a little apprehensive heading to such a nice place with a severely jet-lagged toddler, especially after seeing the venue: a sleek and classy large room decorated in a stunning black-and-gold theme, but we were blown away by the staff’s kindness.

We both ordered a sublime Carpaccio di Manzo for starter. Thinly sliced raw Angus, served with truffle sauce, goat cheese, rocket, sliced Parmesan, and orange segments. The beef was swoon-worthy and positively melted in my mouth. For a main, few treated ourselves to the ultimate comfort food: pasta!

We ordered a portion of tagliatelle verdi with lamb bolognese sauce and Parmesan cream and a portion of mezzi rigatoni with fresh tomato and octopus sauce, with octopus, mussels, shrimps, breadcrumbs and fresh herbs, and we shared. Both dishes were delicious, balanced, decadent and fresh, but bolognese sauce always has a very special place in my heart, and was my absolute favourite.

We chose to drink some Prosecco to toast to our new life in Azerbaijan. Crisp and delicious bubbly Astoria Extra Dry.

Highlight of the evening, as well as the fabulous starters, were the freshly baked, delicious breadsticks: flaky and buttery pastry, served warm.

A dinner at OroNero is definitely a treat that cannot be repeated too often, as it’s a pricy night out, but one that will leave you daydreaming about delicious food for quite a while after!

The staff was incredibly lovely: they were welcoming, spoke excellent English, and were very enthusiastic about interacting with our Little Foodie, provided him with a high chair, and gave an extra bread basket for him to gorge on delicious breadsticks (they did offer him a portion of plain pasta but he was too fussy to cope with that!).
